Statement on Sheikh Jarrah

Israeli courts have given families under threat of eviction from the neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem, until Thursday to come to an agreement with settlers where settlers will claim ownership of properties and Palestinian families will pay them rent to remain living there.

The UK government remains strongly opposed to this but we are yet to see what the consequences of these evictions would be for Israel. These evictions are not only patently immoral, but completely undermine the viability of a democratic Israel.

The UK government stated: No Palestinian is allowed to pursue ownership claims on the basis of pre-1948 ownership. Allowing Israeli Jews to is outright discrimination. There are no grounds for anyone who cares about either, or both peoples of the region, to support these evictions.
